Newport Student Arrested for Airsoft Gun at School

Brief lockdown lifted quickly, no threat to students or public

NEWPORT, Ore. — A 15-year-old Newport High School student was arrested Wednesday afternoon after bringing an airsoft AR-style replica rifle to the area of the school, prompting a brief lockdown of Newport High and surrounding area schools.

According to a news release from the Newport Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:15 p.m. to the area of Newport High School, 322 NE Eads Street, on a report of a school-aged male carrying what appeared to be a rifle.

Newport Police Department officers, assisted by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, responded and began searching for the individual. School administrators from Newport High School and Lincoln County School District personnel worked with law enforcement to place area schools on lockdown until officers could confirm the area was safe.

The suspect was identified and contacted by police. Officers quickly determined the item was an airsoft replica firearm and that there was no actual threat to the school or public safety. The lockdown was lifted, and schools returned to normal operations.

The juvenile student was arrested at the scene on a charge of Disorderly Conduct 1 and was released to a parent.

The Newport Police Department thanked the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance during the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact Officer Mangum of the Newport Police Department at 541-574-3348.
