Underrated Joints Pulled from Pot Shops

Hemp pre-rolls sold at pot shops in Depoe Bay and Lincoln City may pack a stronger punch than advertised, prompting a statewide recall by Oregon regulators over concerns of unintended highs.

The Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission announced the recall Thursday for products from Simply Sol LLC that could contain much higher levels of THC — the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis — than listed on labels. The affected items, distributed to licensed marijuana retailers including three in Lincoln City and one in Depoe Bay, were created Sept. 5 and bear specific universal identification numbers and batch codes.

Consumers who bought the pre-rolls should destroy them to avoid health risks, the OLCC said. One complaint has been reported to the manufacturer, and an investigation is underway to determine how the mislabeled products entered the market.

The recall highlights a common point of confusion in the cannabis industry: Under federal and Oregon law, hemp is defined as cannabis with 0.3% or less delta-9 THC by dry weight, meaning it should not cause intoxication. Marijuana is anything above that limit.

These pre-rolls were labeled and sold as low-THC hemp products, but testing showed some contain far higher levels of THC — enough to produce an unexpected high. Regulators say the mismatch likely stems from mislabeling, testing errors or issues during processing.

In Lincoln County, the products may have been available at Hippy Trip in Depoe Bay, as well as Lincoln City Collective, Lincoln City Collective North and Pipe Dreams Dispensary in Lincoln City. The OLCC is using its tracking system to notify retailers and pull remaining inventory from shelves.

Tins original

The recalled items include six-pack tins and single tubes of strains such as Blood Orange (UID 1A4010500046885000001315, batches PRBOp-0003 and PRBOi-0003), Cornucopia (UID 1A4010500046885000001313, batches PRKNp-0003 and PRKNi-0003), Lemongrass (UID 1A4010500046885000001483, batches PRLGp-0003 and PRLGi-0003), Piña (UID 1A4010500046885000001484, batches PRPAp-0003 and PRPAi-0003) and Pink Panther (UID 1A4010500046885000001485, batches PRPPp-0003 and PRPPi-0003).

Other retailers across Oregon, from Portland to Eugene, may also have carried the products.

Anyone experiencing health issues after using the pre-rolls should call the Oregon Poison Center at 800-222-1222 or consult a doctor. Complaints can be emailed to the OLCC at [email protected], and questions for the manufacturer can go to [email protected].

Hemp products, often marketed for wellness without the high, have surged in popularity but require strict compliance to avoid crossing into regulated marijuana territory.
