LINCOLN CITY, Ore. — A reporter’s quest for golden-hour glory turned into a gritty gray spectacle Saturday evening, as Pacific Ocean waves crashed under a brooding sky instead of a postcard sunset.

Shortly after six p.m., with the sun dipping toward the horizon, your humble correspondent trudged down to the beach. The plan? Capture some sweet sunset shots after the storm. Camera in hand, the air crackled with anticipation — or was that just the distant rumble of thunder?

Mother Nature had other ideas. A lingering low-pressure system from covered the coast in a veil of slate-gray clouds. No fiery skies, no silhouetted surfers. Just the relentless churn of steel-blue waves, frothing white against the shore like an overcaffeinated latte.

“It’s like showing up to prom in flip-flops,” said the photographer, who shall remain unnamed to preserve journalistic dignity. “You brace for beauty, and bam — it’s a gray s***** mess.”
