High-Speed Pursuit on 101 Leads to Arrest

Construction Workers Endangered

NEWPORT — A high-speed police pursuit along Highway 101 in Lincoln County ended Saturday morning with the arrest of a man accused of recklessly driving through a construction zone and endangering highway workers.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said deputies received a report around 8:37 a.m. on Jan. 10 that a vehicle was being operated recklessly near Milepost 106 on Highway 101, nearly striking construction workers and running over traffic cones.

A deputy soon located the vehicle as it entered Newport city limits at a high rate of speed, traveling in the oncoming lane. The driver failed to stop when deputies attempted to pull him over, prompting a pursuit southbound through Newport and the community of Seal Rock.

Assisted by the Newport Police Department and Oregon State Police, deputies followed the vehicle as it reached speeds between 90 and 110 mph. The driver, identified as Johnathan Grimm, eventually turned off the highway near NW Fox Creek and continued attempting to elude officers until reaching a residence.

Grimm then fled on foot but was quickly apprehended without further incident. Lincoln City Police assisted in the investigation and confirmed the vehicle matched the one involved in the construction zone incident.

Grimm was arrested and lodged in the Lincoln County Jail on charges of reckless driving, reckless endangering, reckless endangerment of highway workers, and attempt to elude police.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office thanked the partnering agencies for their assistance in the apprehension.
