Talk About Art with Irina Belova . “Finding My Way Through Fiber” Explore the elegant contemporary fiber artworks of Irina Belova during the Coastal Arts Guild’s next Talk About Art Thursday, September 17th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. at the Newport Visual Arts Center. Belova’s presentation, “Finding My Way Through Fiber,” will focus on how her fiber practice has evolved over the past five years, the lessons she’s learned along the way, and how experimenting with materials has shaped her work. Belova is a self-taught fiber artist born in Crimea, Ukraine, who has lived in Portland, Oregon, since 2006. After building a career outside the arts and earning degrees in economics and public relations, Belova discovered fiber as her creative medium and began her artistic practice in 2020. Becoming an artist wasn’t something Belova planned. What began as curiosity grew into a creative outlet that helped her manage stress and discover the joy of making. Working primarily with sheep and alpaca wool through both wet-felting and needle-felting techniques, she incorporates natural fibers such as silk, hemp, flax, and bamboo into sculptural works, wall pieces, and installations. Her practice explores texture, form, and material, blurring the boundaries between textile and sculpture to create tactile works that invite close looking and quiet reflection. Belova is a member of For ArtSake Gallery in Newport, Oregon, and has exhibited throughout Oregon and Washington, including at the Newport Visual Arts Center, House of Orange in Cannon Beach, William Scofield Gallery in Vancouver, and Ford Gallery and Purple Door PDX in Portland. Most recently, she presented her solo exhibition, Contra Spem Spero (Against All Hope, I Hope), at the MAC Center Gallery in Portland. Thursday Sept 17 @7pm The duo pairs Spanish fiddler, singer and percussionist María San Miguel with American fiddler and composer Galen Fraser. Together, they explore the connections between the traditional music of Spain and the Celtic world, building arrangements around fiddle, voice, cittern and the distinctive rhythms of the Spanish pandereta. San Miguel comes from a musical family in Castile and has devoted much of her career to the traditional songs and instrumental music of her home region. Fraser grew up surrounded by Scottish fiddle music as the son of internationally celebrated Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser. That combination of backgrounds gives San Miguel Fraser an unusually broad musical vocabulary. Their repertoire can move from ancient Spanish songs to Scottish-inspired fiddle tunes, newly composed melodies and energetic dance music. Rather than simply placing two traditions side by side, the musicians look for the places where those traditions overlap, creating a sound that feels both rooted and contemporary. Their album Dots of Light further explores that musical conversation, blending Castilian and Celtic influences with original compositions and collaborative arrangements. For the Cultural Center, San Miguel Fraser offers a fitting introduction to a season built around the idea that traditional music is not static. It changes as people travel, meet, collaborate and carry their music into new places

Enjoy the bounty of Siletz Bay with Explore Lincoln City’s Crabbing Explorience. Hit the sand and catch your own dinner. Before heading out to the shoreline to toss a line, meet a local expert for an overview of Oregon’s crabbing regulations, harvesting methods, identification, cleaning, and cooking techniques. Each crabber can use up to three devices; we recommend a folding crab trap for Siletz Bay crabbing, which can be done right from the shore. The adventure will last approximately one to two hours, is free, and requires no registration. On September 19th at 12:30pm, meet at the pavilion at the end of SW 51st Street in the historic Taft neighborhood of Lincoln City. Parking can be found between Mo’s Restaurant and the pavilion, with flat access to the bay. Schedule and logistics: We will meet at 8:00 am on Saturday, September 19th at the trailhead of the Yaquina Estuary Trail, which is at the Idaho Flat West Clam Access . This trailhead is at the east end of the parking lot of the Hatfield Marine Science Center. We'll spend approximately 45 minutes walking the estuary trail observing fall migratory shorebirds and learning about the Yaquina estuary. Then we’ll head to the Pacific Maritime Heritage Center on the historic Newport Bayfront to learn how to draw a whimbrel, a migratory shorebird. In essence, forest therapy broadly means taking in, through all of one’s senses, the forest atmosphere. Specifically, it is focused on slowing down and appreciating all aspects of the environment. As we gather in nature for this class, our Forest Therapy certified instructor, Jaime Lee Hart, will be your guide, offering structured invitations to immerse yourself more deeply in your senses. Speaker: Anela Choy, Associate Professor, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego Topic: Quantitative sampling of animal communities that span the oceanic water column is central to understanding the dynamics of deep-sea food web structure, biogeochemical cycling, and resource management. Midwater communities inhabit Earth’s largest habitat by volume and include representatives from nearly all major marine animal phyla. Thus, fostering taxonomic expertise and developing sampling and laboratory methods to comprehensively describe these communities is key to drawing food web connections and assessing spatial and temporal dynamics in the sea. In the eastern boundary upwelling system of the southern California Current Ecosystem, we have been sampling and quantifying micronekton communities with a 10m2 MOCNESS between the surface and ~2,000 m to understand their horizontal and vertical dynamics. Across five annual cruises, we quantify community composition at seven stations within deep basins, the escarpment, and offshore stations along a ~700 km transect. We identified over 140 families of fishes, crustaceans, molluscs, gelatinous plankton and other invertebrates. This seminar will present preliminary results examining distance from shore as a proxy for environmental variability along our transect, looking at the effects of depth, sampling time, and station on community biomass, composition, and vertical patterns. To understand the connectivity of these communities across epipelagic, mesopelagic, and upper-bathypelagic depth horizons, we are also measuring stable carbon and nitrogen isotope compositions of dominant species, migrators, and residents. Our goal is to refine our understanding of the ecological roles of deep pelagic animal communities and how these animals shape biogeochemical cycling and dynamically connect ecosystems

Speaker: Mike Tift, Associate Professor, Director of UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding Program, Department of Biology and Marine Biology, University of North Carolina Wilmington Topic: Adult mammalian body mass spans more than eight orders of magnitude, from only a few grams to over 150,000 kg. Among the approximately 6,700 extant mammalian species, marine mammals comprise the group with the largest average body size, with the blue whale representing the largest animal known to have ever lived. Increasing body size is fundamentally associated with reductions in mass-specific metabolic and oxygen consumption rates, with important consequences for the physiological management of oxygen and reactive oxygen species (ROS). Marine mammals face an additional challenge of routine diving that requires prolonged breath holds that can range from seconds to several hours. During extended dives, some species routinely reduce blood oxygen concentrations to levels that would result in tissue injury or death in many other mammals. Yet, paradoxically, recent research has revealed that several deep-diving species maintain remarkably high concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) in both blood and extravascular tissues, a finding that initially appears incompatible with efficient oxygen storage and utilization. In this seminar, I will explore how extreme body size shapes certain aspects of the physiology of large mammals, examine emerging mechanisms that allow diving mammals to tolerate severe and prolonged reductions in oxygen availability, and discuss new insights into the role of CO and the heme oxygenase/CO pathway in marine mammal physiology

Russo Kelly, Associate Professor, Department of the Environment, Geography & Marine Sciences, Southern Connecticut State University Topic: The Ocean Identity Initiative is a collaborative research agenda developed in response to calls within the UN Ocean Decade to “restore society’s relationship with the ocean” and strengthen society-ocean connections. In response to this global priority, and in consideration of ocean program needs, the Initiative advances Ocean Identity (OI) as a novel construct for examining how individuals engage with, experience, and understand ocean environments through the lens of human identity. Drawing on interdisciplinary foundations in environmental psychology, identity theory, place connectedness, and marine social science, this research conceptualizes OI as a multidimensional construct encompassing the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions of individuals’ relationships with the ocean. This presentation will highlight existing and ongoing Ocean Identity research projects, introduce emerging research findings and tools, and identify opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and sectors. Resources and approaches with potential applications for ocean-focused programs, initiatives, and interventions will also be shared. The presentation will conclude by exploring future directions for Ocean Identity research and its potential to advance understanding of human-ocean relationships, strengthen the social science foundations of ocean sustainability, and foster greater collaboration across ocean research, policy, education, and practice

As such, they have numerous unique adaptations to living in the ice. Because of this habitat, they can be very difficult to study in below freezing temperatures and during polar night. However, novel tools, including passive acoustic monitoring, have given scientists a window into the dark icy world of the bowhead. Photography has the power to freeze time, to capture the world and reality. In most people’s minds, photography has to be truthful to reality. It has to depict a scene, atmosphere, or event accurately. But photography is so much more than a simple tool to document our lives… Photography is also a way to express ourselves and our point of view, to share our messages. Photography allows us to change what we see based on our emotions and intent. Photography can be abstract and minimalistic. Photography is art. Long exposure is a technique that embraces this mindset: it transforms reality into something else, into a dialogue between the artist, the subject, and the viewer. By stretching the time used to capture a single image, the photographer includes movement in their art: water becomes smooth, clouds create long silky streaks, trees blur out in the wind. the effects are endless. Led by Sony Artisan of Imagery, Thibault Roland, this event consists of two sessions. The first session is a virtual lecture on long exposure, during which you will learn the process and what equipment you need to create breathtaking images using this unique technique. If you are not able to join this virtual session, it will be recorded and provided to all registered attendees. This virtual session will be held on October 28th from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Registrants will receive multiple emails with instructions for joining this session in the days preceding it. The second part of this event consists of a half-day, hands-on workshop at Cannon Beach, where you will have the opportunity to capture beautiful long-exposure images and benefit from Thibault's in-person advice to take your skills to the next level

If you are not familiar with Celtic music, it is the grandparent of many of our American music genres. The dates for this annual event are Friday through Sunday November 13, 14, and 15. This year the festival is presenting more than two dozen different artists, performing solo and in bands. The festival atmosphere invites rare unique collaborations among the musicians. The festival is continuing the popular daytime "pub style" format at the Commons. The doors open Friday at noon with free entertainment in the Commons. ​ A family of musicians - mom, dad, and two daughters - these are the ingredients that make up the Quartissimos. They are from Chicago, Vancouver, Connecticut and Oregon, and they all started playing when they were between 2 and 6 years old. Mom got pretty famous - she was the first American violinist to be a member of an elite European String Quartet, and the Quartissimos lived in Berlin for 4 years. Dad played in an amazing German orchestra and the kids learned how to speak German. In Oregon, dad conducts the Corvallis Youth Symphony, mom is first violin of the Delgani String Quartet, and kids do what kids do - play quartet with mom and dad on the weekends. It’s all copacetic. We are Anthea, Tzippora, Mirabai and Jason, and we play everything from Mozart to Queen
