Reporter’s Notebook: Chinook Winds Revamps for 30th

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. — Chinook Winds Casino Resort is buzzing with changes as it marks its 30th anniversary this year, blending fresh renovations with nods to its three decades on the Oregon coast.

Stepping inside the casino Friday after a two-year absence, this reporter spotted a transformed layout right away. The once-prominent waterfall near the escalator has vanished, with no water features sighted while venturing through the gaming floor.

The Siletz Bay Cafe now sits where the buffet once was.

The longtime buffet is gone, replaced by the Siletz Bay Cafe, a casual spot reminiscent of Applebee’s with quick-serve American favorites. Nearby, the former deli has evolved into a vibrant food court featuring four options: Double Down Coffee for caffeinated pick-me-ups, La Bahia Mexican Grill for tacos and burritos, C-Dub Subs for made-to-order sandwiches, and Euchre Creek Deli for burgers and snacks.

The Winner’s Circle, previously at the main entrance, has shifted to the cashier’s cage area, streamlining access for repeat players. Security staff reported a string of recent big payouts, adding to the celebratory vibe.

“We’ve had a few folks hit it big lately,” said one guard, who requested anonymity.

Enforcement of the no-smoking and no-vaping policy remains strict, save for a dedicated area. “You see these older regulars trying to sneak a puff, thinking no one’s watching,” the guard added with a chuckle. “But we catch ’em quick.”

Outside, workers were putting finishing touches on a stone and rock wall facelift, part of broader upgrades. The casino’s June anniversary bash featured Jay Leno and fireworks, but the momentum continues with ongoing improvements.
