Lincoln City, Ore. — An adult died Sunday after a sneaker wave knocked them off their feet and pulled them out to sea near the mouth of Siletz Bay, witnesses told authorities.
North Lincoln Fire & Rescue responded around 3:40 p.m. to reports of the individual caught in the strong current at the confluence of Siletz Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Crews launched two rescue jet skis within minutes of dispatch, but extensive search efforts failed to save the victim.

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted with two lifeboats and a helicopter. Lincoln City police supported shoreline operations using a drone, and Depoe Bay Fire District provided additional resources.
The adult was located and pronounced dead at the scene. The Oregon State Police is investigating, and further details will come from that agency.
Officials expressed condolences to the victim’s family and urged caution around the ocean.
“Never turn your back on the ocean,” North Lincoln Fire & Rescue said in a statement. “If the sand is wet, that means the water has already reached that point. And if someone is swept out, do not go in after them — call 911 immediately and keep eyes on them from shore.”
Sneaker waves can strike without warning, knocking people off their feet and pulling them into deep, cold water, the agency warned.
